How-to: Plant Shrubs
Always call 811 before you dig. Have your utilities marked before the digging begins to save future headache and harm.
Size matters. When picking out and purchasing plants, don't forget about the size of the plant as it matures. Choose something that can thrive in the space alloted.
Location, location. Shrubs should be kept 2.5ft from the home’s foundation for proper circulation and drainage. This aids in prevention of fungal disease in plants.
Break up compacted soil and add landscape soil. If the planting site is a high traffic area, till up the soil 8-12 inches on the top.
Donn’t plant too deep. Most people plant new plantings too deeply, the roots should sit just above ground, exposed. Loosen the ball and backfill with native soil to avoid wash out. Add plenty of water to the root ball and additional soil as needed.
Give frequent waterings until established. Water directly to the root ball. Light, frequent watering is more effective than large volumes of water less frequently.
